This is a extension of the RTAS'04 paper on radio-triggered wake-up ("L. Gu and J. Stankovic. Radio-Triggered Wake-Up Capability for Sensor Networks, the 11th IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium (RTAS'04), May, 2004".

Traditional power management uses duty cycling -- a node periodically wakes up to check whether there is work to do. Most of the time, there is no work to do and the energy used by checking is wasted. We design a hardware component that can get energized by incoming radio signal and trigger an interrupt to wake up a node. Now a sensor node sleeps infinitely without periodic wake-ups. When there is an event of interest, the wake-up radio packets, sent by the power management protocol, energizes and awakens sleeping nodes almost instantaneously, accomplishing an 'on-demand' wake-up scheme and significantly enhancing the energy efficiency of the system.

The wake-up hardware works like a passive RFID. The difference is that RFIDs have strong energizing radio signals and performs relatively complexy operations, but the wake-up hardware receives weak radio signals and performs very simple operations.
